Win a Fisher Price Discover n Grow Musical Gym

Sponsored by Nuffnang

I think every mum has photos of their little one on a playmat. I've pretty much put it down as an essential baby item and Emerson at 4 weeks had just started to wake up and be a little more alert. When you first bring home baby from the hospital they feed, they sleep, they cry, they poop and they do it all over again. By about 4 weeks or so they are awake a bit longer and interested in staring at everything - for emerson it's walls, the ceiling, the bookshelf behind me.....

and so it's time to give them a bit of play time. The lovely people at Fisher Price sent me one of their Discover n Grow playgyms. And what I liked about this mat was that it wasn't as big as all of the other mats I've had in the past - with 4 other kids walking and playing around Emerson it means they won't be walking all over the mat. Because as you know kids have a wonderful sense of personal space - NOT! So I actually loved that this was small enough for emerson to lie on it, have a roll (yes he rolled from his tummy to this back) and most importantly tummy time.

tummy time

ahhh tummy time, before you leave the hospital you will hear this being said or you will be asked by your Dr or health nurse if you're doing tummy time. Are you giving baby tummy time? Best not to do this straight after a feed. But it is really important for babies to help develop strength in their necks and back and also to avoid getting a flat head because we now sleep babies on their backs to prevent SIDS so babies aren't on their tummies as much as they used to be. And tummy time lets babies see the world differently too. Now not every baby of mine has loved tummy time but emerson has a really strong neck and loved it.

now the Fisher Price Tracking Lights Musical Gym has lights and music which elodie loves - just a little too much - yes that's right I just said elodie because she has been obsessed with this playmat since I set it up. You simply pull the middle toy and the lights and sounds go off. Now Emerson is too little to do that but I'm sure give him some time and he'll be pulling at it. At the moment he was just happy to stare at the animals and lights and had a bit of a swipe with his arm at one of the toys too.

why yes, my carpet really is that bad!

and my own personal playmat tips - don't put baby down straight after a feed unless you want to be cleaning up the mat afterwards, mornings and early afternoon are the best time for playtime as babies are happy to be playing, look out for those tired signs and know when playtime is over before they get too overtired, get out the camera because you'll catch a few smiles and always try for a bit of tummy time when baby is on the mat. Also if you have wooden floorboards then fold up  a towel or blanket to go underneath to make it even softer underneath.

And one lucky reader will be winning a Fisher Price Discover n Grow Musical Gym. Just tell me why you have to win one and I'll choose a winner. You must be an Australian resident to enter, be creative with your answer and don't forget to make sure your email address is included in your profile or comment so I can contact the winner. Too easy.

  1. Hi Corrie! Your reasons for wanting - needing one - are almost identical to mine! I have a 5 month old baby boy called Oliver, who is the happiest of babies (even today while enduring double ear infections, he's trying his hardest to be his normal happy self, bless him) and he gets VERY loved by his 4 year old brother Isaac, and 8 year old Leroy! And by loved I mean smothered! lol. I have been dreaming about a smaller playmat for the very reasons you mention, so the big kids stop walking all over our old tattered hand-me-down! So we'd LOVE to win this for our little miracle baby Oli Bear. Thank you so much. xo my email addy is tash dot allen @ live.com.au

  9. I have to win one cos I pulled our old one out of a box today to wash for baby #3 due in three and a bit weeks and it was really gross. I don't know if something leaked on the box while in storage or if it was just manky when I packed it away and it festered but it was foul. Too much for my hyperemesis affected stomach and up came breakfast.
*sigh* buy new playmat went onto the ever growing to do list so this would be perfect!!

  10. Hi Corrie, this would come in very handy for our new little baby coming in 8 weeks. This new little addition will be baby no.4 for us and coming as a huge surprise for us, our eldest is 11 and our twins are 9 and were told our chances of having a baby naturally were impossible! So after having our three beautiful children I gave all of our baby things to friends and family. As we are having to buy all of our baby things again this gym would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks Jeanette

  15. Love! Not too big or too many pieces! I am 8 weeks off number 3, and gave away my playmate after number 2 (I so thought I was done... newborns are so addictive!). This would be perfect for our household. I will have a 4yr, 2yr and a newborn! I love your blog - it gives me so many ideas on how to manage so many little ones.

  16. Wow, I can't believe how many baby numbers 4 and 5 are due out there after reading all those comments. Our baby number 4 was due yesterday, so we are eagerly awaiting the arrival, we have 3 school age girls including twins so a smaller playmat would be perfect amongst the everyday chaos! Good luck to all for their upcoming arrival

  18. Being up to number 6 our playmat is looking somewhat....tired. It has served us well but it isn't brining our 8wk old' bubba boy much joy. It's missing parts and it doesn't light up anymore so I'm now wondering why on earth I haven't parted with it before now! How awesome would it be to win your fantastic prize and give our bubba some of his very own personal space. Something of which he is to experience yet!!!! Thanks Corrie for yet another great giveaway!!

  19. A new playmat would be great for baby no.2 due in november. Baby no.1 had a second hand one which served us well but does look a bit tired and no where near as fancy as this fisher price one.

  20. Oh Emerson is just lovely! These are gorgeous photos of him. He is growing so much already. It goes so quickly!!

I would love a playmat for my little man. His life has been a bit uprooted as he and I just moved unexpectedly from Tokyo back to Sydney, without any of his fun toys, games, books, clothes. He was loving his tummy time on his play mat in Tokyo, but isn't so keen on it now here without his fun play mat (which was also a Fisher Price one). I'm not sure if/when our stuff from Tokyo will be coming so am slowly starting to rebuild a collection of fun goodies for him. This would be a fun addition!

  21. hi there Corrie! I would love to win the playmat! I found out today that my very big baby will be born by c-section next Wednesday and the other night I was reading through your blog and was really encouraged by you sharing about your four c-sections. I didn't find out until today that I am having a c-section and was reminded of you at the hospital and thought "I'm going to be okay and I will recover!"

Thank you for sharing your experiences in your blog!
God bless you and the women you inspire as you live your life!

    Love Martine :)

  25. Hi Corrie - this playmat would not be for myself, but my dear cousin. She fell pregnant with her sixth child, only to find out its identical twin boys!!! She lost all her baby things she had stored in the Qld floods, the storage units went under when it flooded in Bundaberg. This is only one I know, but would be such a help for her. She also on the lookout for a much larger car of course, so I have been reading closely all your recommendations. Thank you for this great competition. Heidi

  26. Hi Corrie, I need to win one of these mats as my little man makes such a fuss for tummy time, but he too likes to stare at lights, so I think this will help make tummy time more enjoyable (and I wont have to keep fibbing to the health nurses about how much tummy time bubba is getting!)

  27. Hi Corrie, I would love to win one of these to give to a friend of mine who has just had twins. She already has one from her first sons birth so this would enable her little girl Isla her own mat.
