So I used a very scientific way of recording panadol and nurofen times before heading out the door. I'm happy to report little miss will be getting grommits put in and her adenoids out this friday or next week at the latest. I almost cried in the dr's office as he's given her priority and the only reason I made the appointment was after speaking to a lovely friend who is a speech pathologist. No Dr had actually made the connection and recommend we see the specialist. Sometimes as a mum you have to trust your instinct and take matters into your own hands.
After lunch there was a knock at the door and a huge box. It said it was from retro daddy's work but addressed to me. Odd I thought. I opened the box to find a big bow sticking out. Oh boy I read the enclosed letter which included the following words........'I know that retro daddy worked tirelessly and spent considerable time away from the home front, and I understand the impact and challenges this can represent to someone's significant other.....please accept this gift basket as a gesture of my sincere appreciation for everything that you have done to support retro daddy....... and then I cried! And then when I think of those words I get a bit choked up.
Wow, in all the years of working we've received the odd christmas hamper and a beautiful weekend away but never anything just for me and so beautiful. A silver tray and ice bucket, bottle of champagne, Riedel ( I love Riedel!) champagne classes, lindt chocolates and a variety of L'Occitane products.
Then I heard that Shop 4 Kids is out today and I think I have a little interview in there. But reading the magazine might just tip me over the edge of tears and a bit too much excitement for one day! And all of that news and action happened before 1pm. Please universe, don't send me anymore big news today

ReplyDeleteHow lovely for you. Enjoy them. When my eldest was born, his work sent flowers. But these weren't ordinary flowers abut a positively enormous box of Australian wildflowers including some beautifully perfumed brown boronia.

Corrie, I've had many ear infections since I was Elodie's age. Treatment was not as sophisticated then as it is now. (I'm in 60s) You do well to get treatment as repeated infections over a very long time can cause damage. You've caught it early and I'm sure you'll see a big difference shortly..
How thoughtful of your husbands workplace. I hope everything goes well with Elodie. My eldest son had speech therapy nearly every week until he has 5 and it was worth every moment

Your Elodie and my Hugo are so, so similar! They are about the same age, bum shufflers, late walkers (Hugo at 21 mths), ear infections galore, and late talkers. Hugo had grommets at 10 mths, and grommets again and adenoids out last June. The difference I've seen in him in the weeks following his surgery has been amazing! His speech is really picking up now. All the best with the surgery, and prayers for sweet Elodie :)

The gromits and adenoids have made such a big difference in just 3 months to Evie, her hearing is perfect and she won't need speech therapy. Watching them go through an operation is not great, but worth it.

ReplyDeleteRetro Daddy Has such a wonderful employer to think of you! It's more often that the wives who stay home cooking and looking after the kids, while their spouse puts in long hours to make that company money, are forgotten.

My husband's work sent home a huge gift hamper right before our 3rd bub was born, and in it were all kinds of wonderful goodies just for me, nail polish, creams and balms, soaps, I was very chuffed. Corrie, we have just been through this with our little girl. Going into surgery was very traumatic for all of us (picture her screaming mummy mummy while trying to get out of the nurses arms) as was the next 12 days post operative BUT I can honestly say she is now a different child. She suffered glue ear and was permanently miserable. She is now full of life, sleeps better and is generally so much happier. She too had tonsils and adenoids out and grommets in. We bought a hand band from little grommets and also had ear plugs professionally moulded to her ear which has been a godsend they fit perfectly.

How lovely Corrie. I was sent a hamper after Miles was born when DH had been working crazy hours while Miles was back in hospital. I must say while it was beautiful and generous they might need to take a lesson in gift giving!

ReplyDeleteAnd wonderful that you can get Elodie's Grommets in so quickly. We have seen such a huge improvement in our little boy since he had his a few months ago.
He was almost stone deaf they discovered after all of those ear infections. Now he can hear lots of things, and talks and even sings!!!

Elodie reminds me of my little girl (now 14!!). She used to have two episodes of ear infection a month...and had to be on antibiotics the whole month! She had adenoids and tonsils out and her life and ours changed in less than 24 hours! She was six years old when she had the surgery.

My son (who is now 25!!) went through the ear infections, speech delay scenario when he was a baby too. You'll fing that the gromets & adenoids will make a world of difference. Back then they were reluctant to take tonsils & adenoids out, but he had to get both out when he was 18.....wish they had have done them when he was little!!

It really does make a difference as my friend's son had it done a few years ago now and his speech really improved and so did the ear infections. I think it is lovely that you received such a wonderful pressie too, it means your very supportive of retro daddy doesnt it!

ReplyDeleteI learned this lesson too with my third child, who had movement and speech problems too, and without my taking matters into my hands she might never have become the lovely little 7 year old, who started school today :-)

What a wonderful employer! Mom's are the glue that hold the family together. When you are holding down the fort, and keeping hubby happy and stress-free it makes him more focused in the workplace. More employers should recognize the women behind the men ;)
ReplyDeleteYou will notice great changes with your little ones grommet surgery!! I am nearing 30 and just had mine put in this Spring. I was on about 6 courses of antibiotics a year!! Now I can hear more clearly than I have my entire life!
Very sweet and very wonderful! Good for you Corrie. I remember with my second child, we lived in Atlanta for 2 years and the doctors there kept putting my poor baby on antibiotics until I finally just kept him home and tried doctoring him myself, which worked much better for him but wasn't so good for the job. We moved to Colorado and I took him to the doctor one day for his terrible cough and the doc told me "well he's got asthma, that's whats wrong with him." I was so relieved to have someone take me seriously and give me something other than antibiotics, I cried right in his office.
ReplyDeleteTwenty-nine years ago on New Years Eve, my then 2yr old daughter had tubes put in both her ears. She had spent a total of nine months on antibiotics since she she had turn one year. The pediatrician sent us to the ear specialist and she had surgery. She didn't have any speech problems, however the surgery took longer than expected. When the doctor finished and came to talk to us, he explained that the fluid was so thick that it was like pulling chewing gum out of her ear. He commented that he was really surprised that she wasn't having severe speech problems. Afterward, everything was wonderful. About a year later, she did have to have another tube put in one ear. I know everything will go wonderfully for Elodie. Also it is so sweet of your husband's company to recognize that you need some pampering.

ReplyDeleteMy eldest had hearing issues, which affected his behaviour. I was kind of relieved to find out that he was almost deaf in one ear. It meant that we cokild fix hat problem and it wasn't just our parenting style that needed adjustment. Not so sure that it's the same with our third though :( She's the only girl with 3 brothers and has inherited my "determination" aka stubborness.
Elodie won't know herself. Well done following your Mummy intuition. Your prayers are paying off.

ReplyDeleteGlad to hear Elodie is getting Tubes/grommets. My oldest had 22 ear infections - then got the tubes and never had another. She is 22 now. Good work persisting until she got what she needs. It can be difficult fighting through the healthcare system.

Hi Corrie, just saw this post and had to comment. My Jasper was a late walker (18mths) and had a speech delay. We are on our 3rd set of grommets and had his adenoids removed ,the difference you see in them is amazing! Also they recover so well and quickly at this age. Just a tip, we use blu tac for our ear plugs, we have found this easier to mould. And it works better than all the other ear plugs we tried. Also such a sweet gesture with the pressie xx
