how old when you got your ears pierced?

I was 16. And I was then grounded. And it was threatened that I couldn't go to my year 10 formal. And we're only talking 1991 not the dark ages. And so when I grew up I always swore that whenever a daughter of my own asked to get her ears done she could. Retro daddy had other ideas - he thought high school was appropriate but I obviously hadn't gotten over the whole ears piercing debate. Even grandma betty still talks about it because she gave me some pocket money which I used to get it done. But I love my parents, love, they did a great job raising me. They were strict, old school strict, but I turned out great and am glad I stayed on the straight and narrow - except when I got my ears pierced.

ears

And so yesterday keira got her ears pierced. On Thursday, retro daddy decided that he didn't mind if she got them done so I decided to strike while the iron was hot and before he changed his mind. I did my research, went to a reputable piercing store - this does mean that the sweetest girls ever did keira's ears but they also had several piercings all over their ears and body. But they were lovely and sweet and made keira feel very special

one month
he did not get his ears pierced but he did turn 1 month old yesterday

It was all going well, I decided to do both ears at the same time and there were a few quiet tears when they were done and a little shell shocked keira. But as soon as they showed her the mirror the big smile came out, the tears went away and the pain went away 20 minutes later. Of course tillie wanted hers done but we've decided it's a 6 year old thing.................

So tell me when did you get yours pierced and what is the age in your household for your own little ones?

  1. My dad always said that if you were meant to have holes in your ears you would have been born with them! He gave in when I was about 8 I think. My eldest had her done as a baby and my 3 y.o. only has to say the word and I will get them done. She is going through stages of wanting pretty ears like us so who knows, it could be very soon :o)

  2. Aw sweet!
I was 7 years old, my eldest daughter was 6 when she had her's done.
My youngest is 6 now and we are planning to have her's done soon.

  3. I was 8. I begged and begged my mum. In the end she relented. We got to the place, and I had one side done, admired it in the mirror and had the anaesthetic wear off. It started hurting and I refused to have the other side done!! Mum was adamant, "I have paid for both sides, you will get both sides done!"

  4. My parents had the 16 rule. I had a very busy father though and at a moment of a tired Friday night father weakness I sneaily told him my next birthday was my 16th (actually was only 14) and managed to convince him! I can't believe how cheeky I was! So I got my ears done at 14 :)

  5. I was 2 and half when I had them done the first time and I pierced them a second time myself when I was 14.

My youngest daughter had hers pierced last week, she's 5. You can read about the dramas of it all on my blog :)

  6. she is so cute with her little blue earrings.
I got mine pierced when I was in the 7th grade. way back in 1965!
My aunt was visiting and offered to do it for me. She used 2 pieces of ice to get the lobe really cold and then she pushed in a large sewing needle through the lobe....I can remember my dad could not stay in the room with us. It hurt and I did not want to do the other one but I had to do it. They healed pretty quick and I have worn earrings ever since!

  7. How cute! It was meant to be 10 for our eldest, but on the proviso she was nice to her little bro... She didn't keep her end of the bargain so got them done when she was 11. My youngest daughter started asking years ago to have hers done and she's only 5! She has a long way to go, and thats provided she's nice to her siblings.

  8. My daughter wanted her ears pierced at age 12. I had not had mine pierced because it was forbidden period no matter my age. We went together and my daughter went first and then I thought it would be neat if we had it done together and we did. I was 38. My mom was not happy and it no longer mattered to me. It made the bond with my daughter closer and that is what was important. Fun!

  9. When I was growing up (and I'm not elderly!) only 'fast' girls had pierced ears, or so my mother told me. I finally overcame this mindset at the ripe old age of 50 and had them done with two girlfriends encouraging me and holding my hands (literally). My darling mother had hers done soon after. Wonderful lady, my Mummy!

  10. I did it when I was 18 which at the time was of age. I paid for it myself and decided that if after one I was too chicken to do the other then I would quietly remove the stud and let it heal. So... now I have 3 daughters who have never had their ears pierced - 22, 19 and 16. They sometimes consider it, but none have made the move. Nor do they have a tattoo. In Nova Scotia, there are no regulations for this type of industry so I am content to let them wait. But I really do think it is a personal choice and as a reasonable open minded 53 year old, I am less bothered by people with multiple piercings or tattoos.

  11. The rule was 4 years at our house, and I'll be letting my daughter get hers done at the same time. My dad didn't mind earrings, he was madder when I got my first tattoo at 18.

  12. Blue is Keira's colour Corrie! I recall I was 13, it was a bit of a coming of age thing in our house. Mum said it was a good age to decide yes or no. Interesting, my sister hit 13 and chose not to and now in her 30s still has not pierced them!

  13. I got mine done when I was 5 and I remembered that it hurt quite a bit as I got a little infection (probably because I couldn't keep my grubby 5yo fingers off them)...

I got my daughter's done when she was a baby. I bought local anaesthetic cream at the chemist and she didn't even blink. No dramas and they used the tiniest little studs I have ever seen - very cute.

    Totally recommend the cream.

  14. I don't remember but I know my mom was very strict about it at my house growing up. I got my DD pierced when she was just a few months old. She just put her pacifier in after she got them done, and that was it. It was never a problem afterwards. I even had a daycare mom (someone who I did daycare for) who had me pierce her daughter's ears. They wouldn't let anyone else do their ears except for me, LOL. Too funny. She bought a kit at the store, and both girls had me do it for them. I think the girls were 4 and 5 at the time. They handled it just fine. The more excited they are about it, the better they are able to handle it.

  15. OH, I forgot, I snuck my little sister off and got hers done. LOL. I decided mom was overprotective, and once they were pierced there wasn't much she could do about it except ground us. She did, but little sis had her ears pierced, and she was cool, so it was worth it for little sis's sake.

  16. I had mine pierced when I was 5 the summer before I started school. My 2 daughters were 5 and 4 when they had their's done (just before they started school) and my boys were 6 and 5.
My first earrings were pierced at the doctor with a needle and I've since had 2 more sets (@ 13 and 17) done with a gun and the needle piercings healed up much better and nicer. I even had the top part of my ear pierced but made sure that was done with a needle.

  17. I had mine pierced for my b'day when I was 11 it was a present from my nana. It didn't hurt until I stepped outside shop and it was windy then I felt it! So walked around outside with my hands over my ears! Then when I was 16 had them done again with my first pay check! Then did I get into trouble!! I still have them in today.

  18. Like Sharon my dad also always said that if we were meant to have holes in our ears we would have been born with them. He would not give in until I was 16 and by then I was over the whole thing and did not get them done until I was 21. My daughter is 11 and does not want to go anywhere near a piercing gun so I haven't had to worry about it but I think 10 would be a good age.

  19. In Argentina, where I live, baby girls have their ears pierced before they leave the hospital when they are born. Absolutely painless at that time. I don´t recall my daughter crying. Never heard of a baby crying or having any kind of trauma after that. Keira looks very pretty!!!

    ReplyDelete
  20. I first had them done for my 10th birthday. me best friend had just had hers done and I didn't want to be left out. In my early 20s I let them heal over and then had them redone at 28 (again for my birthday). Had my nose done at 33 (man, did that hurt. I would never do it again!). That lasted 2 years, then I took it out.

  21. I went to a catholic boarding school, and it was mainly the girls of italian descent who had their ears pierced. Then I went to Sydney Uni, and it seemed quite a rebellious bohemian thing to do. But earpiercing wasnt avaialble in chemists or beauty salons back then. So I went to a tattoo parlor at Kings Cross (the "night time area".. for non-Sydneyites), and a very sweet, very tattooed gentleman pierced my ears. I was so thrilled I looked at myself in shop fronts all the way home. My daughter was 8 I think when she got hers pierced. The drama came with the home-done belly button but we wont go there! Luckily nothing else!!!

Beijos.

  23. I'm 44 and I'm still not allowed to get my ears pierced! There would have been hell to pay if I went behind my mother's back and I knew it. I was raised a good Catholic girl too and kept on a very short leash. Now I'm married and have two young children but still no pierced ears. I have decided though that as most people have theirs done, I'm quite happy to be a bit different in not having mine done. Keira looks so pretty with her new earrings. They really suit her. Good on you for being the lovely mum that you are Corrie. Your children will remember that.

  24. Here in India we get them pierced as a religious custom at 3 months:)

  25. How beautiful is that girl of yours!! Blue is definitely for her!
    And happy 1mth!
I was under two years when I had my ears pierced and my girls got theirs done when they asked, so 5 and 4.
    Whatever works!

  26. I was 5. I was out with my Mum and Uncle and nagged so much my Uncle dragged me into the nearest jewellers and asked if I could get my ears piereced. My Mum was young when she had me and when I was 5 she was 22 and still growing upnso had about 6 holes in each ear and a nose stud! My Mum and Dad were divorced by then but looking back I am sure that he must have been a bit annoyed when he found out but I can't remember.

  27. I think I was 10 or 11 when I had mine done. It was a pretty big deal; my mum took me to Myer in the city to have it done, and I took my favourite teddy bear with me. My dad almost had a meltdown when he found out; always was anti piercing (and tattoos)...

    ReplyDelete
  28. 16 I think. I said at least 13 but her Dad took her to get them done for her Confirmation - so 12! A little power play I suppose but it was sweet hearing her plotting with him to get around Mum! Hmmmmm

    ReplyDelete
  29. Keira looks so pretty with her ears pierced, not that she didnt look pretty beforehand mind you. I was about 18 and went into the city with a friend and got mine done. Mum and dad were not too happy about it as mum didnt have hers pierced until my sister got hers done as a present later on, years later! I took my sister to get hers done for her birthday when she was about 13 I think, and yes when you arent allowed it makes you want your daughter to have them at an age where they love them like 5 or 6. Isabelle had hers done when she turned 5 I think and yes there were a few tears for a little bit!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I was desperate to get them done, but I was afraid of the piercing gun...I worked up the courage to go when I was about 12 and my Mum had to hold me down to get the second side done! lol

I got Miss 3's ears done when she was 6 months old. Because she was young, they did both sides at once and used a numbing cream on her ears - I wish they'd done that for me! I didn't want her to go through what I did, and to be honest it was so much easier to keep them clean! It felt like they were healed and done in no time and she's just accepted that they've always been there :-)

If bub #2 is a girl (due Nov), then I'll get her ears done at 6 months too. Hubby doesn't mind, he prefers to think that by getting them done early, they have no memory of any discomfort :-)

  31. I was 18 and in major trouble too but with my Mum it was a medical thing as she felt that the hole may go through a sensitive part of the ear as far as pressure points go. My oldest got hers done at 10 and the youngest at 4 or 5. We need to make issues out of the things that matter not the little things. It is a good idea though to have things to look forward to/work towards and of course you would want to see whether a new thing was age appropriate. S Keira looks lovely and I like the colour she chose. Cherrie

  32. I was 6, I think my Dad took me to get them done. At 13 I decided more holes were cool (mid 80's) so I pierced another set myself in my bedroom after school (my friends were getting theirs done and I wasn't allowed to go get them done but I was a rebel). I didn't think my parents would notice, I didn't wear earrings in the first holes but as soon as we sat down to dinner my Mum noticed and freaked out. All hell broke loose and they wouldn't believe me that I did them myself. I was in so much trouble. I can't even remember when I got the third set done a few years later but I barely wear earrings in my ears at all now.

I got my nose pierced with a gun in the early 90s but it only lasted about a year and I kept having problems with it infecting. I got my nose done again about 12 yrs ago at a bodypiercing studio and it has been fine, no problems ever. I wear a tiny little diamond and besides my wedding & engagement ring it's the only jewellery I wear.

If my daughter wants her ears pierced that will be fine but hopefully not before she's about 5 or 6.

  33. I was born in Egypt, even though I've lived here for most of my life. My mum says they pierce girls ears before they leave the hospital. When I had my little girl I was determined to have her ears pierced as soon as I could handle it. She was 8months. Best decision ever!

  34. I was 13 but i ran out of the hairdressers after one ear had been done. it took me awhile to go back inside for the other one to be done.
My daughter was about 6 when she got hers done, however she is under no circumstance to ask for a second hole. she is now 15.

  35. I was 16 and went on my own, with my mums knowledge but I should have taken her with me as my holes are not even and on the right lobe very low and cannot wear all types of earings. I would love to re-do that one if I could.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I was 16 too and I felt that was too old as all my friends had theirs done much earlier. My older daughter is now 10 and I've told her she can get her ears done when she's 12. She's quite happy with that and other than mentioning a few times that some of her friends have cool earrings, she's never asked to have it done earlier. Her 4 year old sister will be waiting a while which will not make her happy!

  37. I had mine done at school by a friend when I was 14, well actually I had one done by her and the other done the next day at the doctors with a local! I chickened out after the first one was done with a needle and ice! That was in 1968, my girls had theirs done at varying ages when they wanted.

  38. I had my ears pierced twice as a child (I was 7 the first time) but I suffered allergic reactions, even with hypoallergenic posts, so I figured earrings weren't for me.
At 19, with my allergies all diagnosed, I got them pierced again at a salon with titanium posts and the guy used a needle to pierce the holes before putting the studs in, so they properly healed in only two weeks and not six. I got them done the day before I got braces, so I don't remember much pain because my teeth were so uncomfortable!

  40. I was younger than 6 when my mum took me to have my ears pierced. I don't remember anything about it (no trauma!) and I think I didn't ask for it myself. No bad feelings towards my mum, but I think with my own kids it will be done when they really want it and ask for it. Well maybe there will be a limit of 6 or something but it doesn't have to be 16 :)

  41. Oh and later on, when I was about 15 or something, I had my ears pierced 6 times more (without any permission from my parents). Today I only wear 4 small earrings and think 8 piercings in my ears is more than needed... :)

  42. I was 13 but one of those unfortunate souls who cannot wear cheap earrings and they constantly scratched and itched and got infected even with just plain gold studs in so I gave up on it when I was about 17. Pretty sure that 12 will be the age in our house (that means at least 4 more years of being pestered about it!)

Here is typical, to give to the newborn a special gold earrings called "sleepers": special for babies!

These ones will be their earrings for a long time.

Here, it is strange to see small girls with no holes in their ears.

  45. SO cute i had to wait till i was 18!!!! my mum said i would look like a gypsy ! My two 7and 5 had theirs done earlier this year with a friend who was v scared but wanted my 7 yold as moral support, u know "safety in numbers' so they say. Even little Amber who had just turned 5 fronted up to the GUN !!! We had a few tears and shock on all sides but the after effect is worth it.

  46. She looks so cute!
I was about 6 when mum got mine done, I can remember the tears and I think I must have twitched because they are crooked...I have often concidered getting one ear adjusted but I don't know if I can stand the pain again!

  47. Oh, i'm old school & made my eldest wait until term 3 school holidays, so they were done for her graduation dinner. I could see, after the first earring, she was in pain & worried, so i was thrilled my husband was holding her hand & keeping her strong. The rest of the children watched on in amazement. We then saw a movie & that was a nice way for her to be distracted from the pain & she was so happy afterwards. I can't imagine my 3rd girl coping with the pain but wants them, so i think the double gun approach is the way to go, also before her twin sister, or she'll bail & regret it. Gosh, when i got my ears done in Chatswood it was like $15. For my daughter at a reputable place, it was over $50!! Unlike me, she's never lost a stud, i'm shocked & amazed. Plus her school is a tiny bit more liberal than Ravenswood, they are allowed to wear them to school. Love Posie

  48. I had a deal with my mum that it would be for my 10th birthday, but then she let me do it when I was nine-and-a-half which I thought was SO cool. My 5 year old has only realised what they are (as I rarely wear any now) and isn't bothered yet, but I hope we can wait until about the same age. Good on you for doing it early though to make up for your experience!

    ReplyDelete
  49. I also had a father who felt that God would put the holes in our ears if we were meant to have them - and I also had to wait until I was 16. The rule for my daughters is age 13, something to celebrate becoming a teenager. My oldest has 8 months left to wait.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I was 12 years old when my mum tool me to get mine done. Both my girls begged and begged for a very long time, but we said the school holidays before you start high school, we then changed it to when you have double digits, but they kept on begging and they got them done this year aged 8 and 9.A few tears but they love having them.

  51. I was 7. My folks forbid me to get more piercings (big bummer when you're in your teens and "everyone else is doing it"). Funny thing is I don't wear earrings anymore (allergic reactions). If petunia wants her ears pierced she'll have to wait until she's 7.

  52. Oh Corrie, Keira looks adorable and so very happy with herself.
You know this is a topic quite close to my heart, as my Dad was like World's Strictest Parents... he would not let me get my ears pierced at all. And although I questioned him and hassled him to let me, the answer was no. He said I could make my own decision once I was 18! 18!! So what happened was I never did get them done... and still don't have them pierced. I know! Think of all those extra diamond opportunities I'm missing out on, not being able to wear earrings. I guess by the time I could make my own mind up, I was over it.
Emerson is looking gorgeous, one month already! xo

  53. I was 4 years old and have never had my ears pierced again as my Dad doesn't like it.

My daughter Airlie was 5 when she got hers done. My husband and I had talked about getting it done earlier but just never got around to doing it.

I have a cousin who's ears were done as a newborn baby too.

  54. The rule in our household is that my kids can only have holes where they can afford to place diamond studs! If they can't afford to buy their own diamonds, they will have to wait. I gather that buys me a little time anyway (I was 19 when I had mine done). I think I'll stick with being tough on this one. I'd rather they "rebel" by getting their ears pierced than some of the other things they could choose! And really, if they do choose to rebel and have them done sooner, it's hardly an issue!

    ReplyDelete
  55. I was banned from getting them done until I was 18. They were pierced when I was 18 and 1 day! Don't those blue studs really suit Keira?

  56. My 7 year old recently got hers done and she was one of the last ones in her class. Nowadays with the special numbing cream and doing them both at once there is so little pain compared to when I had them done in high school.

  57. I was always told I had to wait until I was 18 so I could decide on my own. So when I was 18 and started to live on my own, one of the first things I did was go and get my ears done.... My daughter hasn't asked yet and she is 15. I expect one of the younger boys to be more eager than her ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  58. I was 7. Been wanting them for a couple of years but my parents waited until I knew what I was getting myself into and knew that I was going to be able to look after them.
With a houseful of boys here I don't have to worry too much about ears being pierced.
Although Bryce did get his done when he was with his mum one weekend, he would have been about 14. They didn't think it through very well and did it in the middle of footy season and didn't have the right info on how to clean them so they got infected and Bryce too it out.

  59. My mother doesnt have her ears pierced and didnt want any of us to get ours done. My sister did her own when she was around 15 i remember seeing them and being horrified with the redness and how sore they looked. When i was similar age i got permission from my dad and paid for them to get done whilst all my friends got belly button piecings!

  60. I was 14 before my mother could be persuaded (my 12 year old sister got lucky and had hers done at the same time!). I had a similar experience to your ear piercing when I cut my own fringe. I was in big trouble, though at 14 I decided that it was my hair and I would do what I wanted with it. Unfortunately I hated it and then had to endure growing it out!

  61. I was about 6 or 7 when I got mine done. Mum always said that I could have mine done so long as I was old enough to care for them. Mine were done at a Doctors Surgery (there was no other choices) with a needle. It hurt so much that I have never bothered to have any more piercings done.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I got my ears pierced when I was 5. I remember my Mum told me if I got my ears pierced, I couldn't do callisthenics any more. I realise now that it was a total lie, but I don't think my Mum wanted to make the costumes etc, and just used getting my ears pierced as an excuse. Funny how I remember that story though...

  63. I was 16 and it was back in 1974. In those days the only place I could get it done in Rockhampton was at a Jewellers and it was expensive. There were no fancy tools like they use today. My ears were pierced with a large needle and it really hurt and they aren't even. I asked my Mothers permission first, I wouldn't have been game to go and have it done otherwise. I started work full time when I was 15 and even though it was my own money I wouldn't have dreamt of doing anything like that without permission first.

  64. I had mine done when I was 5 and so I decided to do the same for my girls. My first tried 3 times and chickened out each time, so ended up getting them done at 6 by the time she went through with it. My next girl decided at 3 that she wanted them done, and once I was sure that it was what she wanted and not big sis coaxing, I let her.

  65. I was also 16 and it was the week before the Year 10 formal. One of my sisters, who is three years younger than me, seized the moment and drew up a contract for mum to sign so she couldn't reneg when it came to the younger sisters turns. Needless to say, we stuck to the letter of the law. Now days, as we are all adults and raising our own children, that little 'contract' is a source of much hilarity.

  68. I was about 5 when I had mine done. I have two girls and I had them both done when they were two. As soon as their hair grew long, I decided to get them done. They both cried for about 10 seconds until they saw themselves in the mirror. I think the older you get, the more traumatic it is! Keira looks adorable! Congrats on baby Emerson too!

  72. I was a baby when my mother had mine done. In a picture of me when I was only six months old, my ears were pierced. So when I had my own daughter my mother almost demanded that we get hers down while she was only weeks old. My mother insisted that this way her ears would heal properly without her messing with them. Now that my daughter is 14, she asked to get 2nd piercings. I figured it wouldnt harm anything to let her have them. So just this past sunday I took her to the store to have her second piercings done. She had both holes done at the same time. And the reaction you described for your six year old was the same for my daughter.

I would also like to say that I truly appreciate the love you share with the world for your family. I look forward to your post just to watch you express love in each post. Thank you for sharing.

  73. I was about 7 when I got mine done.

I've let my daughters decide when they were ready. They had the whole process clearly explained to them & knew that it would hurt. The eldest asked several times when she was around 4, but always changed her mind. Then, when she was about 3 months past 4, she asked again, and said she wouldn't change her mind this time. We made the booking, they could fit us in immediately, so up we went & she came out with pierced ears.

My youngest waited until she was 6 to ask, but didn't vacilate once she made up her mind.

  74. Wow.....some really early ear stories. I was 8 when I asked, only because another girl had hers done, mum & dad said "No child of ours is having her ears pierced at THAT age!" I asked again when I was 10, and asked and asked and asked, finally my mum said yes - We went to the place, they did it, and I was sick. I couldn't walk for 15 minutes because of the pain, it was hellish. My eldest daughter asked when she was 10 (Feb this year), we'll see, she's not asked again, she doesn't seem overly fussed. TBH, I will probably not allow her to have hers done until she is in her teens. I really do not like children with pierced ears, 18 would be my prefernce! hee hee

  75. I got my first piercing when I was 9 yr old. I think I didn't face much problem in my ear piercing and it healed properly at that time.
